Bottle Beach Viewpoint: The Most Spectacular Hike in Koh Phangan
Bottle Beach Viewpoint sits in the far north of Koh Phangan, high above Bottle Beach (Haad Khuad), one of the island’s most iconic stretches of coastline. It’s not the kind of viewpoint you just stumble across, you actually have to plan to get there.
You ride across the island, leave the main roads behind, and hike into thick jungle before scrambling onto a huge exposed rock that hangs above the bay. From the top, you get a complete aerial view of Bottle Beach: a curved strip of white sand, turquoise water fading into deep blue, and steep jungle hills circling the bay. It’s one of the most spectacular views you’ll find anywhere on Koh Phangan.
The hike up the hill isn’t long, but it keeps you working the entire way with constant climbs and uneven ground. You walk over roots, step across boulders, and pull yourself up the final section with ropes before the trees suddenly open up and the coastline appears below you. On clear days, the water shifts from turquoise to deep blue offshore, creating a strong contrast that’s incredibly impressive to see from above.
Many travelers visit Koh Phangan as part of a wider Gulf of Thailand itinerary, often combining it with nearby Koh Samui and Koh Tao. And if you’re planning on visiting, this hike belongs right at the top of your bucket list. It shows you a side of the island that still feels wild and the hike strikes a great balance - physically demanding without being inaccessible for most travelers. Pairing the viewpoint with time on Bottle Beach turns it into a full day out, and that’s exactly how we experienced it.
We stayed at Sea Breeze Resort in Haad Rin, rented scooters from the hotel, and rode north to the trailhead. With stretches of narrow roads lined with towering palm trees and quiet jungle scenery, the ride there felt like part of the adventure. We hiked to the viewpoint first, then spent the afternoon at Bottle Beach swimming, relaxing, and drinking fresh coconut water by the sea. Altogether, it became one of the most memorable days we had in Koh Phangan.

How to Get to Bottle Beach Viewpoint
Reaching Bottle Beach Viewpoint feels like a mini expedition across the island. The best option is to hire a scooter. You’ll have the freedom to stop whenever the scenery demands it, which it often does. On our ride, the highlight was cruising along narrow dirt roads lined with towering palm trees, jungle rising on both sides, and occasional openings that showed views of the coastline. Parts of the journey are paved, others are rougher dirt roads, but it’s all manageable.
From Haad Rin
Haad Rin is on the southern tip of Koh Phangan, so this is the longest journey. Expect around 45–60 minutes, depending on traffic, confidence on bends, and how often you stop to admire the scenery. Roads are generally good until you reach the north, where they become narrower and rougher. This was the route we took from Sea Breeze Resort, and although it was long, it was one of the most enjoyable rides we had on the island.
Haad Rin
From Western Beaches (Srithanu & Haad Yao)
This side of the island is closer to the north, so travel time is usually 30–40 minutes. Roads here are flatter and easier, and the ride feels calmer, but once you head inland toward the northern end of the island, expect the terrain to feel a little more remote.
From Thong Nai Pan
If you’re staying near Thong Nai Pan, you’re already close to the northern side of Koh Phangan, and reaching Bottle Beach Viewpoint typically takes around 20–30 minutes. The route follows a mostly paved, newly improved road through the island’s mountainous interior, with winding sections, rolling hills, and dense jungle scenery along the way, before a short unpaved stretch leads to the trailhead.
Where to Park for the Hike
Search on Google Maps: “Bottle Beach Scooter Parking”
Parking: Free parking at the start of the trail
Important: Don’t ride your scooter down the steep dirt track beyond the clearing. It’s in terrible condition and meant for 4x4 vehicles. Park at the top and hike. From here, it’s a 15–25 minute walk to the viewpoint.
What to Expect on the Hike to Bottle Beach Viewpoint
The hike to Bottle Beach Viewpoint feels wild in the best way. This isn’t a manicured tourist walkway or landscaped trail, it’s a genuine jungle path up a steep hill. The trail rises through thick forest, twisting around trees, climbing over exposed roots, and occasionally threading between large rocks that demand a little balance and attention.
Most of the route is shaded, which helps with the heat, but the humidity still wraps around you as you climb. Expect to sweat. Expect moments where you plant your hands on rocks to steady yourself. Some sections are steep, and the final approach to the viewpoint involves a short but serious scramble, pulling yourself up with ropes fixed into the boulder.
If it has rained recently, the mud builds up and the trail becomes slippery. This is when proper shoes become a necessity. Flip-flops will make your life miserable here. The rock surface at the top also becomes slick when wet. The total hiking duration depends on fitness, pace, and how many breaks you take along the way.

What You’ll See from Bottle Beach Viewpoint
At the top of Bottle Beach Viewpoint, you get an expansive, unobstructed view over Bottle Beach and the surrounding coastline. The forest suddenly drops away, and you find yourself on a massive exposed rock with the northern coastline of Koh Phangan unraveled beneath you.
The viewpoint rock itself is incredible. It’s wide enough to stand comfortably in its lower section, but it narrows toward the edge into a slender ridge that leads to the dramatic overhang where most people take their photos. There are no railings, no barriers, nothing to soften the reality of standing on the edge of a sheer drop. For those with a fear of heights, it can be intimidating. On wet days, it can be genuinely dangerous.
On our visit, there were around a dozen other travelers at the top. The ridge was crowded, and people were carefully trying to pass one another on narrow rock sections. Rather than squeeze toward the final edge, we stayed slightly back on the lower, wider rock platform. The views were just as stunning, and we could enjoy them without worrying about slipping or bumping into someone.
If you want the dramatic edge shots, arriving in the early morning is usually better than the early afternoon, which is when the viewpoint becomes the busiest. That being said, the views from any part of the rock are fantastic.

Visiting Bottle Beach After the Viewpoint
Bottle Beach (Haad Khuad) is often promoted as one of Koh Phangan’s most beautiful, secluded beaches - and visually, this is true. The bay is impressive from above and still beautiful when you’re standing on the sand. The beach curves around swimmable turquoise water, backed by uninterrupted jungle. It has that slightly isolated atmosphere that many travelers hope to find on Koh Phangan.
But it’s not perfect, and it’s important to say that honestly. On our visit, we noticed bits of rubbish washed ashore: plastic cups, small pieces of debris, and the kind of tide-borne trash that unfortunately affects many beaches around Southeast Asia. It didn’t dominate the entire shoreline, but it was noticeable enough to take away a little of the magic. The beach is still beautiful, but it isn’t pristine in the way some photos might suggest.
Even so, it’s still a place you can enjoy. On our visit to Bottle Beach, we found a beach bar and restaurant shaded beneath palm trees, with a pool table, casual outdoor seating, and fresh coconuts that went down a treat after hiking in the tropical heat. We swam, cooled down, relaxed, and despite the imperfections, it was still a great place to spend an afternoon.
