10 Best Rooftop Bars in Bangkok: From Nobu to Lebua

In recent years, Bangkok has developed and evolved so much that it’s earned the reputation of being the “New York of Asia” or the “new New York”. Endless high-rises now pierce the skyline and sitting at the top of many of them are these dazzling rooftop bars. Each time we arrive in the city and take a taxi from the airport, we’re struck by how many skyscrapers we can see out the window - rising like massive bamboo shoots.

We like to visit a new rooftop bar on every trip we take to Bangkok, as it always makes for a special night out. We’ve recreated scenes from the Hangover at Lebua, seen glorious sunsets at Nobu, and partied until the wee hours at Tichuca. Each rooftop bar is different and unique in its own way - some are proper bars, others just offer a nice view, and a few have world-class cuisine. Below we outline our personal favorites in the city.

10 Best Rooftop Bars in Bangkok

1. Nobu Bangkok

The best rooftop bar in Bangkok, in our opinion, is Nobu - situated at the top of the Empire Tower in Sathorn. The platform on the 60th floor is simply sensational: you can see the entire city around you including the Chao Phraya River, IconSiam, and the King Power Mahanakhon building. We arrived at sunset and it was incredible - especially seeing the orange glow against the swirling bronze balustrades. This bar offers the usual cocktails and drinks, in addition to its signature Japanese/Peruvian dishes.

2. Le Du Kaan

Just a few stories down from Nobu, on the 56th floor, is Le Du Kaan - not technically a bar but a restaurant that still provides stunning views. The food here is Thai (rather than Japanese) and is regarded as modern, fine dining. Le Du Kaan has a tiered terrace, jutting out from the Empire Tower, with outdoor seating on cushioned couches. Like Nobu, the architecture is defined by wave-like structures - creating cool frames for sunset photos.

3. Tichuca Rooftop Bar

Tichuca is the perfect introduction to Bangkok’s rooftop bars - constantly full of people (both tourists and Thais) and offering jaw-dropping views. The bar is famous for its “Avatar Tree” or “Jellyfish Tree”, an LED installation that changes color spectacularly throughout the night. Since the food is limited, we recommend having a late lunch and arriving by 5:00 PM - so you can catch the first elevator up. Then you’ll have time to watch the sunset, order a few cocktails, and stay until the DJ sets and dance floors start to rage. Friday or Saturday nights are best for a party atmosphere.

4. The Speakeasy Rooftop Bar Bangkok

The Speakeasy Rooftop Bar is located on the 24th/25th floors of the Hotel Muse, not too far from Lumphini Park. The views aren’t as soaring as Nobu or Tichuca, but the 1920s Prohibition-era theme and intimate vibe makes it a unique alternative. It’s a trendy place to hang out with friends, order a few gins, and relax inside the cigar lounge - with jazz music putting you in a whimsical mood. You can also check out the secret garden and private glass domes, which gives it that “Instagrammable” touch. Starting your night here, before heading out to the nightclubs, is a solid option.

5. SIN Rooftop Bar Bangkok

SIN Rooftop Bar is nestled on the 27th floor of the Avani+ Riverside Hotel, giving you clear views of the Chao Phraya River - including the glitzy ferris wheel of Asiatique in the background. What makes this bar unique is the elevated red DJ booth, and gold and black geometric patterns on the wall. Live DJs play every night - a mix of loungy and feel-good house music that slowly builds the closer it gets to midnight. With a capacity of just 80 seats, it feels exclusive while having enough atmosphere for a buzzing night out.

6. Akara Sky Hanuman Bangkok

Staged across the 58th and 61st floors of the futuristic OCC building, sits Akara Sky Hanuman: a multi-leveled bar merging Thai mythology with digital art. As soon as you enter, you see Thai murals painted on the ceiling and a giant monkey god head (which lights up at night) leading you out onto the open-air platform. There’s even cultural performances to watch, such as Thai dancing and Muay Thai, which changes up the night a little bit. This is one of Bangkok’s highest bars, so still expect sensational views.

7. Eagle Nest Rooftop Bar

Wat Arun is perhaps the most recognised structure on the Chao Phraya River and seeing it lit up at night is an absolute must-do in Bangkok. For this experience, we recommend heading to Eagle Nest Rooftop Bar: a cozy establishment in the Old Town, providing proper sit down meals and a few different levels in which to admire the temple across the river. Just note that Eagle Nest doesn’t take bookings, only walk-ins, so you’ll want to arrive nice and early (say before 5:00 PM) to secure your table for the night.

8. Spire Rooftop Bar Bangkok

The view from Spire Rooftop Bar, at the luxurious Dusit Thani Hotel, is extraordinary. It’s probably only beaten by Nobu. You get a wonderful mix of Lumphini Park and the city’s skyscrapers in the background - in many ways resembling Central Park in New York. The food and drinks are expensive, but not as extortionate as Lebua. If you’re staying at this beautiful hotel, it’ll be hard not to constantly pop up to the 39th floor.

9. Sky Bar (Lebua)

Lebua is a mixed bag really. On the one hand, it still feels iconic from the Hangover movie but on the other it’s crazy expensive. We actually stayed at the Lebua after snagging a deal on booking.com. The views from the room and the semicircular balconies were cool, however everything was quite run-down and shabby. Sky Bar was worth visiting though: it remains a classy and elegant destination, with superb views over the Chao Phraya River. If you can get over the prices, you’ll still have a great time here.

10. Ojo Bangkok

Ojo Bangkok is the highest restaurant and lounge in Thailand, located on the 76th floor of the iconic King Power Mahanakhon building - giving you that feeling of dining in the clouds. The restaurant serves upscale Mexican cuisine - food so good it’s been listed on the Michelin guide. You can have your meal indoors, and then head to the rooftop terrace for cocktails and to admire the views more closely. Ojo makes for the perfect date night with your romantic partner, as its decor is both glamorous and retro-futuristic.

FAQs for Bangkok’s Rooftop Bars

How strict is the dress code?

Common sense applies at most rooftop bars in Bangkok, and for men this means avoiding shorts and flip-flops (no matter how hot it is outside). Other clothes like gymwear and beachwear are also a big no-no. If the rooftop bar is located at the top of a luxury hotel or commercial tower, chances are you’ll be expected to dress well. We found this out the hard way at Lebua, when we were forced to buy long pants (last minute) from a cheeky retailer at the bottom of the State Tower. His entire business model is probably designed around men being turned away at the door.

Are the rooftop bars in Bangkok expensive?

The rooftop bars in Bangkok are much more expensive than a typical bar. But ultimately, you get what you pay for. Minimum spends can be conditional upon reserving a table, for example: there’s a 2,000 THB minimum spend per person at Nobu. Also, some of the luxury restaurants can be pricey: it’s not uncommon to spend between 2,500-5,000 THB per person at Ojo. The best way to counter this heavy price tag is to choose one rooftop bar on your Bangkok trip and make it your one special night out.

Is there an age limit and what ID should I bring?

Thailand’s legal drinking age is 20, believe it or not, so this is usually the age limit set for the rooftop bars. If you look under-age, security will ask to see your physical passport as you enter the ground-floor lifts or higher up by the bar’s main entrance. That being said, some of the restaurant zones can be visited by under 20s - great news for families traveling with young kids. As annoying as it is to bring your passport with you, it’s the safest option.
