15 Best Beaches in Thailand: Famous Spots & Hidden Gems

Many people believe the world’s best beaches can be found in places like the Greek Islands, Pacific Islands, or in other parts of Asia such as Indonesia or the Philippines. But from our experience, and we’re reasonably well traveled, nothing compares to the beaches of Thailand. Not only is it easy to find your own slice of paradise, but it comes at a fraction of the price of what you’d pay in say the Maldives or Seychelles. Throw in Thai hospitality and the delicious food, and you’ve got yourself a seriously good package.

By no means are all the beaches in Thailand perfect though. Admittedly, some suffer from over-tourism and others (unfortunately) have been ruined by litter and rubbish wash-up from the sea. But there’s still hundreds of beaches that remain pristine and untouched. We’ve been traveling through Thailand for almost a decade now and the beaches never fail to amaze us - whether we’re island hopping in the Andaman Sea or just relaxing with family and friends at a local beach in Chanthaburi.

15 Best Beaches in Thailand

1. Main Beach - Koh Ngai

The tiny island of Koh Ngai, situated in the Trang Archipelago, is home to one long spectacular beach called Main Beach. It boasts soft white sand, shimmering turquoise waters, and (what we loved most) epic views of three small islets. The island has no towns or roads to speak of, and the only nightlife consists of a few rustic beach bars. We spent our days here taking beach walks, swimming in the colorful coral reefs just off shore, spotting hornbills, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere of Thapwarin Resort

Main Beach in Koh Ngai tops our list of the best beaches in Thailand due to its simplicity: all you have to do is switch off from the world and appreciate the natural beauty. As a couple, the island made for a nice break from the usual hustle and bustle of Thailand travel. We had romantic dinners by the water, treated ourselves to a few massages at the open-air massage parlour, and even got to witness a Blood Moon one night - which made for some awesome photo opportunities over the longtails anchored on shore.

2. Donald Duck Bay - Similan Islands

We visited Donald Duck Bay as part of our Similan Islands boat tour from Phuket and it was a place we never wanted to leave. As we pulled up to Island No. 8 in the national park, we could see gigantic granite boulders balancing precariously at each end of the beach and water so turquoise that it left us speechless. There were a few other visitors that day, but it didn’t stop us from jumping in the water and walking up to “Sail Rock” for the ultimate view of the curved white sand and jungle-clad backdrop.

We could only stay for an hour but it was honestly one of the best hours of our lives. Don’t just take it from us: Donald Duck Bay was ranked as the 10th best beach in the world by The World’s 50 Best Beaches Guide. Snorkeling also plays a part on most tours, typically done at other islands such as No. 4 and No. 9. In fact, the entire day is incredible and is worth the long journey from Phuket. The Similan Islands are open from November to May every year, closing during the rainy season for preservation reasons.

3. Paradise Beach - Koh Kradan

Travelers come to Koh Kradan for one reason really and that’s Paradise Beach. This eastern facing beach has shallow, crystal-clear waters and a small strip of perfectly white sand. If you swim out far enough, you’ll reach the coral reef which provides the main activity on the island: snorkeling. Day trips to Koh Kradan can easily be arranged in Koh Ngai, Koh Mook or back in Koh Lanta. Otherwise, you can stay the night in a beach bungalow, something that many people love for its back-to-basics atmosphere.

4. Bang Bao Beach - Koh Kood

Koh Kood is our favourite island in Thailand, known for its tropical beaches dotted along the west coast. Bang Bao Beach is the standout for us: an unspoiled, horseshoe shaped bay with palm trees and a small wooden pier jutting out into the water. The beach is secluded, making it ideal for the simple pleasures of swimming, sunbathing or reading a book under a tree. You can also hire a kayak at high tide and explore past the headlands - looking back at the beach from a different, equally spectacular perspective.

There’s usually a few sailboats docked in the bay, which gives it a dreamy vibe, especially when the sun starts to go down. At sunset, you can wander down to Hidden Gem Monkey Bar, order a few cocktails, relax on beanbags and soak up golden hour with the sounds of Balearic house music. Just up the road is Bang Bao Home Food as well, a cozy local restaurant serving Thai food at an affordable price. All in all, Bang Bao Beach just oozes peace and serenity - a place where you could easily chill out for days on end.

5. Koh Rok Yai Beach - Koh Rok

The beach that surprised us the most on our island hopping adventures around Thailand was Koh Rok Yai Beach. Originally, we were looking to go snorkeling at Koh Haa - after it was recommended to us from one of Kat’s Thai friends. When we went to book our boat tour from Koh Lanta, we saw that Koh Rok was included on the itinerary as well. So, we jumped on board, and ventured deep into the Andaman with no real expectations. As we arrived at the twin islands of Koh Rok, we were absolutely floored.

The water glistened in bright emerald colors, and it was so transparent that you could easily see the coral formations below the surface. Stepping onto Koh Rok Yai Beach, we were stunned by the soft (flour-like) white sand and the artistic looking pieces of driftwood scattered on the beach. It was paradise on Earth. We reveled in our time here but at the back of our minds we envisioned what it would be like to stay overnight - camping in a tent right on the beach. That sense of seclusion would be heavenly.

6. North Point Beach - Koh Lipe

Koh Lipe is the most logistically difficult island to reach in Thailand, as it sits on the maritime border of Malaysia. But once you finally get here, you’ll be rewarded with a paradise that is often called the “Maldives of Thailand”. The beach in Lipe that resembles the Maldives the most is North Point Beach - home to pristine white sand and idyllic blue water. At low tide, the water recedes and a sandbar is formed - making it a hit with photographers. The beach also has longtails, sunbeds, and a few restaurants and bars nearby.

7. Railay & Phra Nang Beach - Krabi

If you’ve ever seen photos of golden beaches surrounded by towering limestone cliffs and massive sea karsts, it was probably in Krabi and specifically Railay Beach and Phra Nang Beach. Our favorite of the two is Phra Nang as it offers so much: caves, rock-climbing walls, karst views, and white sand. Travelers can either stay at a resort in Railay or visit on a quick and easy longtail trip from Ao Nang. A walking path connects the beaches and is full of caves itself, plus a few cheeky monkeys hanging about.

8. Beaches of Koh Surin Nuea - Surin Islands

We visited the Surin Islands from Phuket and it turned out to be the toughest day trip we’ve ever had in Thailand. It was a two hour van ride to get to the pier in Khao Lak and a further two hours out at sea. It’s safe to say we arrived back to Phuket completely exhausted, but the memory of the beaches has stayed with us. There are two main islands that make up the national park, Koh Surin Nuea and Koh Surin Tai. The former is where you go snorkeling and the latter is where you’ll find the Moken village.

It was a little bit cloudy when we went but we still got to see the emerald waters, white sand, and lush rainforest that Koh Surin Nuea is famous for. Twin Beach was particularly stunning - with unique rock formations in the shape of a human heart. Another highlight of the Surin Islands was our visit to the Moken village. We learnt about the seafaring culture, wandered around the wooden huts, and bought some jewellery from the children running the stalls (tourism is their main means of survival these days).

9. Beaches of Koh Kham - Koh Mak

Koh Kham is Thailand’s most unique island in our opinion. You’ll find an abandoned luxury resort here (Ananya Hideaway) that is eerie and visually spectacular at the same time. There’s also two beaches here - one with black volcanic rocks and the other lined with palm trees. Some say the sand was imported, as part of the resort’s development, but all we know is that it’s incredibly white and soft. Koh Kham is like an art installation and beach paradise all wrapped in one - a must visit if you’re in Koh Mak.

10. Maya Bay - Koh Phi Phi

Maya Bay is a victim of its own success in many ways. It was closed in recent years but has now been reopened with much stricter rules: accessed via a pier and jungle trail at the back, and no swimming allowed apart from dipping your feet in the water. The steady flow of tourists also makes it hard to enjoy, even if you do arrive on the early morning boats. That all being said, it’s still (undeniably) one of Thailand’s most beautiful beaches and still worth visiting as long as you temper your expectations.

11. Beaches of Nang Yuan Island - Koh Tao

Nang Yuan Island is the pearl of the Gulf, where three tiny islets connect together via sandbars. It’s commonly visited on a day tour from Koh Tao or Koh Phangan, however it’s still possible (albeit pricey) to stay overnight at the island’s only accommodation: The Nang Yuan Island Dive Resort. This gives you the opportunity to relax on the beach without the constant interruption of daytrippers, and if you’re really keen, learn how to dive with the resort running courses and diving trips directly from the island.

Although it gets busy, authorities do a good job of keeping the island pristine with no single-use plastics or aluminium cans allowed. This means you can swim in crystal-clear waters surrounded by white sandbars and huge granite boulders, and pull up a beach lounger without any rubbish around you. Apart from heading up to the viewpoint, which is stunning by the way and worth the small effort it requires, there’s not much else to do aside from swim and sunbathe. But what more do you really need?

12. Freedom Beach - Phuket

As far as Phuket beaches go, Freedom Beach might just take the cake. The beach has a secluded atmosphere, only accessible by boat or by hiking down a steep trail through the jungle. When you arrive, you’re greeted by a lush cove and idyllic waters with a few longtails bobbing in the water. It can get busy in the peak season, December through to February, but going early in the morning can still provide a quiet experience. The 300 meter beach has plenty of room to stretch out a towel and while the day away.

13. Kantiang Bay - Koh Lanta

Koh Lanta’s west coast has a seemingly endless array of beaches, from long sweeping bays to hidden gem coves. Our favorite of them all is Kantiang Bay: a one kilometer beach boasting golden sands and verdant hills. Swimming is amazing at high tide and at low tide you’ll see dramatic rock formations appear at each end of the beach. This beach is quiet, but certainly not dead, with some great bars nearby such as the famous Why Not Bar hosting fire shows and Aqua Bar providing perfect sunset views.

14. Klong Prao Beach - Koh Chang

On our most recent trip to Koh Chang, we stayed at Aana Resort, right next door to Klong Prao Beach. We had never been to this beach before, opting for Lonely Beach and White Sand Beach on our previous visits, but this one surprised us. Klong Prao is large and open, and because of this offers sensational views at sunset. We found an awesome beach bar here called Sol Beach Club and stopped by several times, once for lunch and another time to watch the sunset. It looks like a cool place to stay as well.

15. Laem Haad Beach - Koh Yao Yai

The vibe of Koh Yao Yai is much more local and relaxed than Phuket, which for many will be a breath of fresh air (both metaphorically and literally). The beaches here are quite rugged but one stands out for its natural beauty - Laem Haad Beach on the northeastern tip of the island. A sandbar is formed at low tide and stretches out into Phang Nga Bay in the most photogenic way. If you’re visiting Koh Yao Yai on a day trip from Phuket, or even better as an overnight stay, be sure to check out Laem Haad Beach.

FAQs About Thailand’s Beaches

What is the best area in Thailand for beaches?

Our favorite beach area in Thailand is the Trat Islands, home to the trio of Koh Chang, Koh Kood and Koh Mak. The collection of beaches here are phenomenal especially on Koh Kood with Bang Bao Beach, Ao Jark Bay and the popular Klong Chao Beach. Phuket and Krabi also have great beaches of their own in addition to stunning islands nearby. If you’re looking for castaway-type beaches the Trang Archipelago is where you’ll want to go. Samui, Phangan and Tao aren’t to be shrugged at either.

Where can you find family-friendly beaches in Thailand?

We suggest families head to Koh Chang, Koh Samui or Phuket for a beach holiday. These islands have the right amount of family-friendly resorts, amenities, and things to do to keep the little ones happy and entertained. All three are easy to reach - with direct flights to Koh Samui and Phuket from Bangkok, and a reasonably stress-free journey to Koh Chang (although it does require traveling overland). Party islands such as Koh Phi Phi, Koh Phangan, and Koh Tao aren’t ideal for families to be honest.

When is the best time to visit Thai beaches?

The golden rule is to visit Thai beaches between November and April, when blue skies and calm seas are the norm, basically during the dry season. However, there are a few exceptions. The Gulf Islands of Samui, Phangan and Tao actually follow a different weather system between May and August and are relatively dry compared to other beach hotspots. Koh Samet is another island that breaks the rules: you can visit all year-round as it sits in its own micro-climate and, what’s better, it’s close to Bangkok.

What are the most overrated beaches in Thailand?

We’ve come across a few overrated beaches in Thailand over the years, although not many tend to fall into this category. For starters, Pattaya Beach is one to steer clear of due to the crowds. Patong Beach in Phuket is another, unless you intentionally want to be close to Bangla Road. Ao Nang Beach is slightly overrated as a beach itself but it’s just so convenient for onward travel in Krabi. One place that really disappointed us was Bottle Beach in Koh Phangan - we heard such great things but it was full of litter.
