Tiger Cave Temple, otherwise known as “Wat Tham Suea”, is the most famous and (arguably) most spectacular Buddhist temple in all of Krabi province. It’s situated inland from the coast, roughly 20 kilometers northeast of Ao Nang Beach, known for its golden Buddha statue at the top of a mountain - surrounded by limestone cliffs covered in jungle.

Ko Panyi is a floating fishing village in the Phang Nga province, surrounded by some seriously impressive limestone karsts and mangrove forests. Although the village can get busy with tour groups visiting at lunchtime, if you go earlier in the morning you’ll get to see fishermen unloading their nets, children going to school, and locals hanging out in stilted wooden houses - all without the crowds.

As we found out on our day trip from Bangkok, there’s more to Ayutthaya than meets the eye. The old capital is famous for its ruins - with brick prangs, Buddha heads wrapped in roots, and bell-shaped chedis dotted throughout the historical park. But what we loved most was the city’s riverside setting, the delicious food, and the fact that trains and tuk-tuks made up our day’s transportation.

Certain places in Thailand seem too perfect to be true and Nang Yuan Island is one of them. Located in the Gulf of Thailand, right by Koh Tao, this tiny trio of islands is known for its white sandbars, turquoise waters and boulders stacked around its shores. The best part about Nang Yuan Island is its protected status, which helps keep the island pristine all year round.

There’s not a lot to do in Ban Rak Thai apart from slowing down and enjoying the peaceful atmosphere on offer. You don’t really come here to tick off a bunch of attractions, instead the village itself is the attraction. You’ll find cute homestays wrapped around the lake, red lanterns hanging down from the wooden houses, and tea fields arranged in neat rows.

We’ve taken a few motorbike adventures in Southeast Asia but nothing compares to the Mae Hong Son Loop. This 600 kilometer road trip starts and ends in Chiang Mai, and takes you through the off-beat mountainous landscapes of Northern Thailand - with endless hairpin turns, misty valleys, remote villages and cultural gems to experience along the way.

Koh Rok is nestled within Mu Ko Lanta National Park, and is made up of two tiny islands called Koh Rok Noi and Koh Rok Yai. Koh Haa, on the other hand, consists of five limestone islets surrounded by a turquoise lagoon - giving it the name “Five Islands”. Koh Haa is well known within diving circles, but it still remains a hidden gem for the average traveler/tourist.

For many travelers, the question of the best island in Thailand is a hotly contested debate. Some love the direct journey to Koh Chang, others revel in the energy of Koh Phi Phi, while a small few prefer the castaway feel of Koh Kradan. There’s no right or wrong answer, but you’ll still want to know which ones are worth considering before you make any concrete plans.

Winding mangroves, limestone karsts, and hidden lagoons await at Phang Nga Bay - one of Thailand’s most iconic seascapes and landscapes. This massive marine park is spread out between Phuket and Krabi, and makes for an epic day trip from either destination. Or you can stay the night in the bay itself at floating villages or hillside villas, with amazing views on offer.

Krabi is, undoubtedly, one of the best beach and island hubs in Thailand: known for its towering limestone karsts, powdery white sands, winding mangrove forests, and laidback adventurous spirit. This province in Southern Thailand covers a massive area, almost 5,000 km² to be exact, giving travelers access to beautiful destinations such as Railay, Koh Phi Phi, Koh Lanta, Hong Islands, and endless little corners of paradise.

Koh Lanta is a wonderfully laidback island in the Andaman Sea, situated just south of Krabi and east of Koh Phi Phi. Instead of the dramatic limestone karsts found on some of the neighbouring islands, here you’ll encounter a much more expansive landscape: wide open beaches, twisting mangroves, rolling hills draped in jungle, quiet fishing villages, and a rugged south where the wild edges of Mu Ko Lanta National Park begin.

Our island-hopping trips have taken us to some pretty amazing places, from Koh Lipe in the far south to Koh Kood in the far east, but none felt as remote as the Surin Islands. Situated miles from the mainland, close to the border of Myanmar, this protected archipelago offers travelers a true adventure: rugged beaches, world-class snorkeling and sea gypsy communities that add a touch of culture to every visit.

Although Khao Sok has become popular recently, visiting still feels like you’re embarking on a true adventure. The small village offers a chilled backpacker vibe, eco-resorts hide amongst palm trees and little waterfalls can be explored near the park entrance. Staying overnight allows you to take the longtail trip into the heart of the lake but a few extra nights lets you go jungle trekking, wildlife spotting and discover hidden gems.

Koh Kham is a tiny private island situated off the coast of Koh Mak, famous for its abandoned luxury resort and unusual black volcanic rock formations. We spent the day here during our stay in Koh Mak and it turned out to be one of the highlights of our trip. We did nothing more than sunbathe, swim, take photos and explore Ananya Hideaway but the time simply flew by.

Koh Mak truly lives up to its reputation of being a “hidden gem”. There are no 7-Elevens or resort chains to be found here, instead a handful of sleepy roadside cafes and intimate family-run hotels dot the landscape. The lack of mass-tourism is noticeable as soon as you hop off the boat and take a golf cart to your accommodation, weaving through bumpy dirt tracks and lush coconut groves.

Balancing tourist activities with a healthy dose of local life is always our approach in Phuket. That’s the key to a great experience. Since it’s so large, you’ve really got to do your own research, follow the locals, get off the main drag, and discover the version of Phuket that feels right for you. Don’t fall into the trap of booking all-inclusive packages. Instead, go exploring, and you never know what you’ll find.

People who say you should never visit touristy destinations have probably never been to Koh Phi Phi. It’s one of our favorite islands in Thailand, not because it’s untouched and off-the-beaten-track, but because of its intoxicating atmosphere.
